I am super excited to be teaching a group class called The RESTART Program. It’s a 5-week program that involves a sugar detox, or as I like to call it, a REAL FOOD challenge. I’ve created this awesome banana-sweetened dark chocolate muffin recipe for my RESTART participants! It’s tasty enough that you’ll want to make it even when you’re not on a sugar detox though. :)
You really have no idea how much sugar you are eating until you try to cut it out of your life completely. It’s eye-opening, and it’s difficult. But it’s also empowering and life-changing.
It’s somewhat similar to the Whole 30 challenge… The idea is to get in the habit of eating nutritious meals, not to substitute our current junk foods with new ‘paleo’ junk foods. HOWEVER. I do think there is some value in making this an enjoyable experience that is realistic for everyone, especially if you have never eaten this way before.
The detox doesn’t allow any sweeteners–not even raw honey or stevia. I don’t see a problem with consuming raw honey in small/moderate amounts in general, but I do think it’s good to go without it for a little while to give your blood sugar regulating organs a break and recalibrate your taste buds. It’s amazing how tart foods begin to taste sweet after a while!
The detox also limits fruits to the low-glycemic types: lemons, limes, grapefruit, berries, green apples, and green-tipped bananas. That’s why I created these banana-sweetened chocolate muffins… They are paleo, gluten-free, grain-free, nut-free, and they don’t contain any sweeteners… Just green-tipped bananas!
While I don’t recommend baking these and binging on them instead of eating dinner, I do think there is value in making nutritious treats now and then. Just knowing that it’s possible to enjoy a dark chocolate muffin without eating gluten, sugar, and hydrogenated fats goes a long way in making a healthy lifestyle more sustainable.
I think these would make a great Valentines treat, especially for my RESTARTers who are doing the cleanse over Valentines Day! No need to feel deprived–you can enjoy eating decadent foods within the context of a nutrient-dense diet. :)
